LED Lighting Perfect to Meet Reduced Energy Consumption Goals

THE PROJECT

As part of its overall strategy to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs Cambridgeshire County Council, under the supervision of Roy Drayton, Client Property Engineering Manager, is committed to the implementation of a programme of measures which includes the installation of NET LED Lighting.

The initial project was managed and installed by Cambridge based Imtech Aqua. The conventional lighting in St Ives library was replaced with low energy LED tubes and LED lamps supplied by N E Technology.

THE SOLUTION

With both electricity savings and ongoing maintenance costs in mind, it was decided to replace the conventional lighting with NET LED Lighting; an easy option as NET LED Lighting uses the same fittings, contains no glass and does not require ballasts or starters which further saves energy.

NE Technology supplied over 230 LED Tubes in various sizes ranging from 600mm(2ft) to 1500mm(5ft), together with over a hundred LED GUIO and GL-ES Lamps. The typical energy saving for the replacement tubes was in excess of 65%. Each 600mm fitting contained 3 tubes. The total power consumption of the fitting using conventional fluorescent tubes with starters and ballasts was 77W compared to the NET LED Tube installation having removed the starters and ballasts of only 24W, providing a total saving of 53W per fitting.

THE RESULT

St Ives Library is a local community library providing facilities for adults and children. ty1arilyn Charles, Library Manager thinks "the new lighting is magnificent and has lifted the appearance of the whole environment". Roy Drayton, whilst delighted with the change of environment, is totally satisfied that the new NET LED Tubes and Lamps will not only benefit the library users, reduce site maintenance costs and the Council's carbon footprint, but most importantly provide a significant reduction in energy costs for many years to come.

The King's Library Tower

"Unlike fluorescent tubes, the NET LED Tubes produce no UV light which would be damaging to the books"

[Patrick Dixon, Head of Building Services]

Bancroft Road Carpark

"We achieved a payback of around 2 years equating to a saving in annual electricity costs of £13,490 per annum and a reduction in our carbon footprint of 67 tonnes of CO2 and greatly improved the lighting effect in these public areas"

[Raymond Dill, Environmental initiatives officer]

Nisa Store in Fenstanton

"It is a new concept for an electrician to fit LED lights rather than fluorescent tubes and being able to utilise conventional fittings has made them very simple to install. The store opened on the 19th June 2009 and is recognised as one of the most energy efficient shops in the area."

[Terry Wager, Electrical Engineer to Nisa]

The National Institute for Biological Standards and Control

"The NET LED Lighting gives a clean bright light which is essential in the laboratories where experiments requiring meticulous attention to detail are taking place."

[Juse Hughes, Environment and Energy Manager]

St Ives Library Cambridge

"Cambridgeshire County Council is committed to reducing energy consumption and costs and is driving a programme of measures which includes the installation of NET LED Lighting."
