Reduced Maintenance and Lighting Bills for this Laboratory

THE PROJECT

The National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC), which is a Centre of the Health Protection Agency, is the global leader in the field of biological standardisation. It is responsible for developing and producing over 90% of the International Standards in use around the world to assure the quality of biological medicines.

The Institute is the UK's Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL), responsible for testing of biological medicines within the framework of the European Union. NIBSC scientists have an international reputation for excellence in research and are widely consulted on issues of biological medicine safety and efficacy. The Institute has a particularly close relationship with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is the leading WHO International Laboratory for Standards.

THE SOLUTION

As part of its drive to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs, NIBSC has a programme to install LED lighting to replace fluorescent strip lights throughout the Institute. Areas include laboratories, offices, maintenance workshops and the newly rebuilt Boiler House. These different operating environments have required a range of NET LED Tubes including T5, T8 and T10 diameters and lengths from 600mm (2ft) to 1800mm (6ft). Energy savings between 60% - 70% are estimated to be made by using the NET LED Tubes instead of existing fluorescent lighting.

THE RESULT

"As part of the Carbon Management Programme, NIBSC is committed to improving energy efficiency on site; and one project where significant savings can be made is with replacement lighting. Not only do we save energy, money and carbon but this project has a quick payback for the return on our investment" said Jude Hughes, Environment & Energy Manager at NIBSC. "Also because of the nature of work we perform here the NET LED Lighting gives a clean bright light which is essential in the laboratories where experiments requiring meticulous attention to detail are taking place.".. "There are many other benefits associated with this type of lighting and we look forward to significant savings in maintenance costs with the expected life of the LED Tubes being over 50,000 hours."

The King's Library Tower

"Unlike fluorescent tubes, the NET LED Tubes produce no UV light which would be damaging to the books"

[Patrick Dixon, Head of Building Services]

Bancroft Road Carpark

"We achieved a payback of around 2 years equating to a saving in annual electricity costs of £13,490 per annum and a reduction in our carbon footprint of 67 tonnes of CO2 and greatly improved the lighting effect in these public areas"

[Raymond Dill, Environmental initiatives officer]

Nisa Store in Fenstanton

"It is a new concept for an electrician to fit LED lights rather than fluorescent tubes and being able to utilise conventional fittings has made them very simple to install. The store opened on the 19th June 2009 and is recognised as one of the most energy efficient shops in the area."

[Terry Wager, Electrical Engineer to Nisa]

The National Institute for Biological Standards and Control

"The NET LED Lighting gives a clean bright light which is essential in the laboratories where experiments requiring meticulous attention to detail are taking place."

[Juse Hughes, Environment and Energy Manager]

St Ives Library Cambridge

"Cambridgeshire County Council is committed to reducing energy consumption and costs and is driving a programme of measures which includes the installation of NET LED Lighting."

[Roy Drayton, Client Property Engineering Manager]
